Raj Kamal Jha is the chief editor of The Indian Express. The newspaper has won the International Press Institute’s India award for Excellence in Journalism four times. He is the author of five novels. His latest The City and The Sea, explores the afterlife of a rape in New Delhi. Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen has called it a “a book you have to read.” His fiction has been translated in over a dozen languages including German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Turkish and Italian. He has taught in the international journalism program at the University of California, Berkeley. He was awarded IIT’s Distinguished Alumnus Award for telling stories of a changing India with “courage and compassion.” For leading the newspaper’s investigative journalism – in a range of areas from politics and business to health and education – he was awarded Journalist of the Year at the National Red Ink Awards by the Mumbai Press Club.
