Phuntsho Namgyel

Phuntsho Namgyel is the author of Forest for Gross National Happiness. He became the first director of the Election Commission of Bhutan, when the country transitioned from absolute monarchy to democracy (2006), overseeing the conduct of the first Parliamentary elections in Bhutan (2008). A forester by training, his research on Cordyceps led the Government of Bhutan to legalise their picking by local residents (2004), making it the primary source of cash income for the highlanders, and a major source of foreign exchange for the country. He is also a regular contributor to Kuensel.
